Embark on an epic journey across the vast and wondrous world of Orsterra and discover the captivating stories of each of the eight travelers. Would I do it again, nah.Eight travelers. I had to do it through 2 different "gaming periods", with a 6-12 months break in between because after 2 full chapters out of 4 I got bored.Īm I glad I got through it? Definitely. I wanted to get all 8 endings in one game so I could get the true ending, it ended up taking over 100 hours and it was a slog, story being as bland as it is. It makes it very hard to get sucked into the game storywise. In Octopath Traveler, all 8 of the characters have their own journeys and the 7 others barely add vague banter to the active character's story. In FF6, they each latched onto the main plot and added to it. Now I ain't saying this can't be done, look at Final Fantasy 6, it's still one of my favorite scenarios of all time, and hell, they had up to 12 main characters (not counting the extra 2). I had a hard time getting invested in the characters and their stories, probably caused by the fact that there are 8 characters, with each their own motivations and all. It's an old-school styled JRPG, so the story is litterally what holds the game together right? Well, the story is very bland. So why would I only want to put a neutral rating on this game? The soundtrack is also excellent, as usual Square knocks it out of the park. The graphics are pixelated, but some of the best I have ever seen, made me actually question the necessity of having AAA graphics when you can look this good. The only gripe I could have is that there are clearly better Path Actions than others. Out of combat is also good, encountered no bugs whatsoever. Combat commands are crisp, the breaking / weaknesses system is a good addition to old school JRPGs. Mechanically speaking, the game is great. TLDR: Good game mechanics, great pixelated graphics, excellent soundtrack, boring, unengaging story. This is one of the times a review is positive just because Steam doesn't have a "Neutral" rating.
